Scenario Overview:
The first aiders are called to a patient who is lying on their bed at home by a rather panicked family member. The patient will be not breathing. The scenario is all about checking whether the first aiders realise CPR is ineffective if carried out on a bed.
Difficulty:
First Aider Easy
How the scenario should progress:
The scenario should progress like a 'normal' resus scenario until the ambulance arrive. The patient will not start breathing even if shocks are delivered with a defibrillator. You could also get the family member to interact more with the first aiders to test how they communicate and if they comfort them.
Patient 1:
Name: Brian Brown    Age: 68    Sex: Male
Medication: Warfarin
Allergies: None known
Past medical/family/social history: History of heart disease but it hasn't affected Brian's life too much, he just has to slow down a bit.
Findings on examination: The first aiders will find the patient not breathing. No obvious injuries. No obvious cause.
Possible treatment from first aiders: Primary survey followed by CPR and getting help. Request for a defibrillator. The first aiders should move the patient from the bed onto the floor to carry out CPR. If trained, they may also want to use oxygen, airway adjuncts and a BVM.
Time after start: 0 mins
Response: Unresponsive
Airway: Yes
Breathing? No

Tips for the patient actors:
You could use an actor initially to test how the first aiders remove the patient from the bed but otherwise a CPR doll can be used.
